4th International Zinc and other Aqueous Batteries Workshop

September 17-19, 2025 - Kyoto, Japan

4th IZABW

There is growing demand for electrochemical energy storage systems and significant efforts are being undertaken to develop post-lithium technologies, accordingly. The venerable zinc-based battery technologies, as represented by zinc–air and zinc–manganese, come back into focus in recent years with renewed interest owing to their advantages such as high specific energy, low costs, good safety records and absence of critical raw materials. In addition, other aqueous battery systems such as aqueous rocking-chair using lithium/sodium ions and protons are also intensively studied, especially in large-scale applications such as renewable energy storage. Trials have been made to solve the issues of these aqueous battery systems such as limited cycle stability, low efficiency and high self-discharge rate.

The 1st and 2nd International Zinc/Air Battery Workshop were held in 2016 and 2018 to support the development of the zinc/air battery technology in industry and academia. The 3rd one was held in 2023 as International Zinc–Air and other Zinc Batteries Workshop to include other zinc-based batteries such as zinc–manganese and zinc-ion systems.

The present 4th one includes non-zinc aqueous systems for the first time, and will be held as International Zinc and other Aqueous Batteries Workshop (4th IZABW) in Kyoto, Japan on 17th to 19th of September 2025, aiming at sharing the state-of-the-art of the technology at an international level, discussing promising R&D pathways for the technical improvement of these batteries, and supporting mutual communication among the participants. This workshop is organized and supported by The Committee of Battery Technology, The Electrochemical Society of Japan, Grillo Zinc Powder GmbH, and IZABW Advisory Board.

How to register

Please fill the terms shown below and send an email to izabw4@elech.kuic.kyoto-u.ac.jp with the email subject “Registration at IZABW4”. Registration should be done individually from the participants themselves (group registration is not accepted).

  1. Name:
  2. Affiliation:
  3. Affiliation address (including the country/area):
  4. E-mail address:
  5. Banquet attendance (select from Yes / No):

Thanks to the support from the sponsors, there is no participation fee. Light lunch on the 18th and 19th, drinks for coffee breaks for 3 days, and food/drink at the banquet on the 18th are included. The local committee regrets to inform you that the lunch/banquet restaurant cannot provide vegetarian, vegan, halal or other special dietary needs. We will do our best to indicate what is included in each food.

As the number of the participants is limited, we urge you to register as early as possible. We may need to decline late registrations. We also hope that the number of participants from the same group is limited, so that we can welcome diverse attendees from various fields, countries and regions. The confirmation of registration will be sent from time to time. The deadline for registration is July 31, 2025 (or earlier if fully occupied).

Additional poster communication might be considered upon direct request to izabw4@elech.kuic.kyoto-u.ac.jp.
